Your home’s thermostat is like the brain of the HVAC system — if it’s not working properly, then your heating unit, furnace, and air conditioner may have to work harder to efficiently cool or heat your home. But what if your thermostat is working fine, but the placement of it is creating issues with your HVAC system working efficiently? The team at Carini has some tips to help you find the ideal place for your thermostat.
The Importance of Your Thermostat
The thermostat measures the temperature of the air in your home or office. It determines whether the air it measures matches your desired setting. However, if the thermostat is placed incorrectly, it may give improper information to your air conditioner or heater and cause it to make your home too hot or too cold.
Thermostat Placement Do’s
Place your thermostat on an interior wall, away from doors or windows. Interior walls tend to have a more consistent temperature. Plus, if you choose a frequently used room, such as a living room or family room, then you’ll have the optimum temperature in those rooms. Make sure that the thermostat is centrally located, too, where it has access to constantly circulating air and can get a more accurate measurement. Be sure to place it about 52 to 60 inches above the floor — heat rises, so placing the thermostat midway up the wall should give the most accurate reading.
Thermostat Placement Don’ts
Don’t place your thermostat near a window or door. The air from outside can influence the thermostat or cause constant fluctuations. Avoid placing the thermostat somewhere that is in the line of direct sunlight, too. The sun can artificially raise the temperature around the thermostat, causing it to make the entire house colder than it needs to be. Avoid placing the thermostat in the line of air vents, too, as it will be measuring the air that’s coming from your HVAC unit.
